Numerology: the numbers in your birth date and name

Pythagorean numerology (the Phillips system): how to work out your Life Path, Expression, birth chart, arrows, Personal Year and peaks. Honest about its limits.

What numerology is

Numerology turns your date of birth and your name into a handful of numbers, then reads those numbers as a map of temperament and the rhythm of a life.

Each number from 1 to 9 carries its own set of qualities. The most important is the Life Path number, worked out from your birth date; after that come the birth chart, the numbers from your name and the yearly cycles.

Source label: Modern, reflective. Numerology as it's practised today is little more than a century old, despite carrying Pythagoras' name. It hasn't been validated by scientific research, so read it as a mirror for reflection, not a verdict.

If you're new, the first three sections and the meanings of the numbers give you the main idea. The middle sections help you work out and read your own numbers. The last two cover what numerology can't tell you, and how HiMi uses it to help you grow.

Where it comes from

The idea that numbers carry meaning is ancient, but calculating numbers from a birth date and a name is a 20th-century invention.

  • 6th century BCE: Pythagoras and his followers in Greece saw numbers as the foundation of everything, linking them to music and astronomy. They left no method for a Life Path number.
  • Antiquity: Greek and Jewish writers gave letters number values to interpret words, practices known as isopsephy and gematria.
  • 16th century: Agrippa matched the Latin alphabet to numbers in alphabetical order, the forerunner of today's numerology letter chart.
  • Early 20th century: L. Dow Balliett in the United States wrote about the "vibrations" of names and numbers, more or less founding modern numerology. The word "numerology" only appears in English around 1907.
  • 1992: David A. Phillips (1934–1993) published The Complete Book of Numerology, with the Ruling Number, the 3×3 birth chart, the arrows and the four-peak pyramid.
  • 2019–2021 in Vietnam: TV host Lê Đỗ Quỳnh Hương began writing about Phillips' system in late 2019. Her book on the subject came out in November 2020, and in early 2021 numerology even featured in MoMo's Tết campaign.

So numerology in Vietnam almost all comes from the Phillips system. It differs from the numerology popular in the United States in a few rules, so the same birth date can give different numbers. Your numbers on HiMi always say which method is used.

What you need

Just your date of birth and your full birth name; birth time, birthplace and gender aren't used. That's a big difference from BaZi, and it means anyone can do it straight away.

Three basic operations

Every number in numerology comes from three simple operations.

  1. Reducing: add the digits together until one digit is left. For example 67 becomes 6 + 7 = 13, then 1 + 3 = 4.
  2. Master numbers: when you reach 11 or 22, stop and don't reduce further. 22 is usually written 22/4 as a reminder that it reduces to 4.
  3. Letters to numbers: each letter matches a number from 1 to 9, using the table below.

LettersA J SB K TC L UD M VE N WF O XG P YH Q ZI R

Vietnamese names lose their diacritics before the lookup: Đ becomes D, Ă and  become A, Ơ becomes O, Ư becomes U. Vowels are A, E, I, O and U, plus Y; in English names, a Y standing next to another vowel counts as a consonant, as in Yolanda or Mayer.

The core numbers

These eight numbers are the heart of a reading. The example column uses a made-up person, Lê Hoàng Minh, born on 15 August 1995.

NumberHow it's calculatedExampleWhat it's about
Life Path (Ruling Number)Add every digit of the day, month and year; reduce until you reach 2 to 11; a total of exactly 22 stays as 22/41+5+0+8+1+9+9+5 = 38, giving 11Your main path, how you naturally approach life
Day numberThe day of birth, reduced15, giving 6A standout talent
Attitude numberDay plus month of birth, reduced15 + 8 = 23, giving 5First impressions, your initial reaction
ExpressionAdd every letter of the full name, reduce61, giving 7The abilities you bring and want to express
Soul UrgeAdd the vowels only21, giving 3What you want deep down
PersonalityAdd the consonants only40, giving 4How other people see you
MaturityLife Path plus Expression, reduced11 + 7 = 18, giving 9A direction that becomes clearer from mid-life
Personal YearDay and month of birth plus the year in question, reduced to 1–9For 2026: 1+5+8+2+0+2+6 = 24, giving 6The theme of each year in a nine-year cycle

Why is there no Life Path 1? Every total that reduces to 1 passes through 10 first, and this system stops at 10. Life Path 2 is rare too, since only a total of exactly 20 gives 2; totals of 29, 38 and 47 all stop at 11.

By HiMi's count across every birth date from 1950 to 2015, Life Path 2 makes up only about 1.8%, 22/4 about 2.1% and 11 about 9.3%. Each of the other numbers is around 11%, so roughly one person in nine shares your Life Path.

What the numbers mean

Each number is a set of qualities with a bright side to build on and a shadow side to work on; no number is good or bad in itself. The same table is used to read the Life Path, the name numbers, the peaks and the personal year.

NumberKeywordsBright sideWhat to work on
1Beginnings, independenceTakes the initiative, goes first, stands on their ownStubborn, reluctant to ask for help
2Connection, sensitivityPerceptive, a good listener, a natural peacemakerEasily hurt, reluctant to say what they want
3Thinking, expressionQuick-witted, funny, a way with wordsScattered, speaks before thinking
4Practicality, foundationsOrganised, persistent, finishes the jobRigid, resistant to change
5Freedom, experienceFlexible, curious, adapts fastImpulsive, finds long commitments hard
6Responsibility, creativityCares for others, good taste, full of ideasWorries too much, takes on other people's problems
7Learning through experienceWants to understand things at the root, draws their own lessonsOften has to stumble before changing, can close off
8Independence, self-directionGood with work and money, reliableControlling, finds feelings hard to voice
9Ideals, serviceBig ambitions, wants to help the communitySets expectations too high, easily disappointed
10Adapting, starting againFlexible, confident, easy to likeWavers without a clear direction
11Intuition, inspirationPerceptive, far-sighted, inspires othersTense, impossibly high standards
22/4Building big thingsTurns big ideas into systems that workPiles on pressure, carries everything alone

The Life Path tells you the road; the birth chart tells you what you're carrying for the journey. That's why two people with Life Path 7 can still be very different.

The birth chart and its arrows

The birth chart places every digit of your birth date into a 3×3 grid, ignoring zeros. Filled squares are what you already have; empty squares are things to learn more deliberately.

The grid is always laid out the same way: the top row is 3, 6, 9; the middle row 2, 5, 8; the bottom row 1, 4, 7. If a digit appears several times, it's written that many times in its square.

The birth chart grid: three rows for mind, feeling and the physical, and eight arrow lines369258147MindFeelingPhysicalEight arrow lines: three rows, three columns, two diagonals
The birth chart grid: three rows for mind, feeling and the physical, and eight arrow lines

Each arrow outside the grid points along a line of three squares; the name of the strong arrow sits at its head.

  • Top row, mind (3, 6, 9): thinking, memory, imagination.
  • Middle row, feeling (2, 5, 8): intuition, sensing, handling emotions.
  • Bottom row, physical (1, 4, 7): action, working with your hands, dealing with practical things.

When all three squares in a line (across, down or diagonal) are filled, you have a strong arrow. When all three are empty, you have an empty arrow.

Strong arrowNumbersWhat it suggests
Planner1-2-3Likes order, thinks before acting
Willpower4-5-6Persistent, follows through
Activity7-8-9Energetic, needs to move and act

Emotional Balance2-5-8Understands and manages own feelings
Intellect3-6-9Good memory, enjoys thinking and analysis
Determination1-5-9Perseveres, sees goals through
Spirituality3-5-7Compassionate, sensitive to deeper things

The traditional names of the empty arrows sound heavy. HiMi reads each empty arrow as a skill to train, not a defect.

The last two columns are the share of birth dates with that arrow, counted by HiMi across every day of each century. Everyone born in the 20th century has a 1 and a 9 in their birth year; everyone born from 2000 has a 2. People born after 2000 have more empty arrows simply because their birth years contain more zeros, not because they're lesser in any way.

Name chart and combined chart. The letters of your name also become numbers placed in the same grid. Adding the two grids gives a combined chart: an empty square in the birth chart may be filled by the name, and a square that stays empty in both is the one most worth noticing.

Cycles: personal years and the four peaks

If the Life Path is the map, the personal year is the weather of each year in a nine-year cycle, and the four peaks divide a life into four big stages.

The personal year adds your day and month of birth to the year in question, reduced to 1–9. From it come the personal month (personal year plus the month) and the personal day (personal month plus the day). The personal year changes on 1 January; some schools change it on your birthday.

YearThemeGood for
1Planting seedsStarting new things, setting goals for the whole cycle
2Patience, connectionTending relationships, waiting for seeds to sprout
3ExpansionLearning, socialising, sharing ideas
4Building foundationsWorking hard, putting your routines in order
5ChangeTrying new things, welcoming change instead of avoiding it
6ResponsibilityGiving time to family and loved ones
7ReflectionDeep study, looking inward, deliberate rest
8HarvestBig decisions about work and money
9ClosingFinishing, letting go of what no longer fits, preparing a new round

The four peaks, also called the pyramid, are built from three base numbers: the month, day and year of birth, each reduced to 1–9.

  1. Peak 1 is month plus day; peak 2 is day plus year.
  2. Peak 3 is peak 1 plus peak 2; peak 4 is month plus year.
  3. Results above 11 are reduced again; 10 and 11 stay as they are.
  4. Peak 1 arrives at age 36 minus the Life Path, with 22/4 counted as 4. Each later peak comes 9 years after the one before.

Each peak opens a stage that lasts until the next one; the number on the peak is that stage's theme. Each peak comes with a challenge, the difference between the two matching base numbers, which names the lesson to work through in that stage.

For Life Paths from 2 to 11, peak 1 falls somewhere between ages 25 and 34, just when many people start standing on their own feet. Before peak 1 is a preparation stage: learning, trying things and finding yourself.

Reading a sample

The quickest way in is five steps: the Life Path, the birth chart, the name numbers, the current stage of life, then something to reflect on. The example is Minh, the made-up person from the BaZi article, born on 15 August 1995, birth name Lê Hoàng Minh.

  1. Life Path 11. Adding 1+5+0+8+1+9+9+5 gives 38, then 3 + 8 = 11, and it stops there. This is the master number of intuition and inspiration: perceptive, far-sighted, able to fire others up, but also prone to tension from impossibly high standards.
  2. Birth chart. The birth date has two 1s, two 5s, one 8 and two 9s; squares 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 are empty. Squares 1, 5 and 9 are all filled, so Minh has the Determination arrow, and no empty arrows at all.
  3. Name numbers. Expression 7, Soul Urge 3, Personality 4. The name fills squares 3, 4, 6 and 7, so the combined chart has only square 2 empty; the number 5 appears three times in the name.
  4. Current stage. In 2026 Minh is 31, in the peak 1 stage carrying the number 5, which lasts until 2029. 2026 is a Personal Year 6.
  5. Something to reflect on. A perceptive person with plenty of ideas and staying power, who loves freedom and experience. Square 2 is empty in both the birth date and the name: Minh would do well to deliberately practise listening, voicing his feelings and accepting help.
RowThinking columnWill columnAction column
Mind3: empty6: empty9: 9 9
Feeling2: empty5: 5 58: 8
Physical1: 1 14: empty7: empty

Minh's four peaks are built from three base numbers: month 8, day 15 reduced to 6, year 1995 reduced to 6. Peak 1 arrives at age 36 − 11 = 25.

PeakFromAgeNumber of the stageChallenge
12020255 · Freedom, experience2
22029343 · Thinking, expression0
32038438 · Independence, self-direction2
42047525 · Freedom, experience2

Challenge 2 repeats three times and matches the empty square 2: the lesson of connecting and listening follows Minh through several stages. Challenge 0 at peak 2 is usually read as a stage where you choose your own lesson.

Using the method common in the United States, reducing the day, month and year separately before adding, Minh's Life Path would be 2 instead of 11. By HiMi's count, about one in five people born between 1950 and 2015 gets a difference like this; your numbers always say which method is used.

Step 5 is only one way of reading. Another reader might stress something else, and only Minh knows which parts ring true.

What numerology can and can't tell you

Numerology is a compact language for talking about yourself, not a proven measurement.

Numerology can open up:

  • A shared vocabulary for naming strengths and things to work on, and for talking about them with the people close to you.
  • A yearly rhythm for planning: which years to start, which to nurture, which to close.
  • A gentle starting point for asking yourself questions, especially if you're not used to self-reflection.

Numerology can't tell you:

  • All of who you are. Everyone born on the same day has the same Life Path and the same birth chart; about one person in nine shares your Life Path. Family, environment and choices are what make them different.
  • A scientifically validated result. Academics class numerology as a belief system, not mathematics. The numbers also depend on conventions: change how you add or how you treat the letter Y and the result changes, like Minh's 11 and 2.
  • A replacement for a professional. Don't use numerology to choose a career for your child, hire or reject people, choose a partner, or decide on health, large sums of money or legal matters.
  • A reason to change your name. Some services sell new "everyday names" to fill empty squares in a chart. On HiMi, an empty square is something to practise, not a hole to patch with a name.

Watch out for the Barnum effect. In 1948, psychologist Bertram Forer gave his students what he said was a personal personality analysis; in fact everyone got the same text, and most rated it as highly accurate. The vaguer a statement, the easier it is to see yourself in it, so HiMi prefers specific statements that could be wrong, so you can check them yourself.

The best way to use it is to treat each statement as a hypothesis: read it, compare it with your real experience, keep what's true and drop what isn't. When a statement turns up in BaZi, numerology and a psychological test alike, that's the hypothesis to check first.

From numbers to Rise

On HiMi, numerology is only a starting point: like BaZi, each reading moves through three layers, Blueprint, Seasons and Rise, and always ends with something you can do.

LayerThe questionWhat numerology contributesMinh's example
Blueprint: the starting mapWho am I, where am I strong, what should I train?Life Path, birth chart and arrows, name numbers, empty squaresA perceptive 11; the Determination arrow; square 2 empty in both birth date and name
Seasons: the weatherWhich season of life am I in?Current peak, personal year, month and dayA number 5 stage until 2029: experience and change; 2026 is a year 6, a year of responsibility and family
Rise: the pathWhat can I do to grow?Turning empty squares, empty arrows and the year's theme into concrete, measurable actionsOne conversation a week just to listen; tell a family member one wish each month; one evening a week fully for family

When two methods meet. BaZi reads Minh as a responsible Wu Earth, with Resource, meaning support, hidden, so he tends to carry things alone. Numerology, by a completely different route, also points to an empty square 2, the square of connection and accepting help. An overlap like this is worth checking first, but it's still only a hypothesis for Minh to test against his own life.

HiMi's underlying idea stays the same: your numbers show where you start, like the chart in the story of Yuan Liaofan. Way of thinking and passion, the two factors Inamori Kazuo stressed, are yours to choose every day.
