Astrology: the sky on the day you were born

The zodiac and your birth chart: the twelve signs, Sun, Moon and Rising, the 12 houses, aspects and transits, and why your sign may differ on other sites.

See your chart

What the zodiac is

The zodiac divides the band of sky the Sun travels through in a year into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees each, named Aries through Pisces. Western astrology reads where the Sun, Moon and planets sat in those 12 signs when you were born as a map of temperament and the rhythm of a life.

When people ask "what's your sign?", they mean only your Sun sign: the sign the Sun was in at your birth. That's one of about ten positions in a full chart, which also includes the Moon, the Rising sign, the planets, 12 houses and the angles between them.

Don't confuse it with the 12 animals of the Chinese and Vietnamese zodiac. Your animal comes from the lunar year, the branch of the year pillar in BaZi; your zodiac sign comes from the Sun's position on the solar calendar. Someone can be both a Pig and a Leo.

Source label: Traditional, reflective. Astrology has more than two thousand years of history, but controlled studies have not found a link between birth charts and personality. Read it as a mirror for reflection, not a verdict.

If you're new, the first section, the twelve signs and the Big Three give you the main idea. The middle sections help you read your own chart. The two sections before the glossary cover what astrology can't tell you, and how HiMi uses it to help you grow.

Where it comes from

The zodiac was born in Babylon, took shape in Hellenistic Egypt, and only moved from predicting events to describing personality in the 20th century.

  • Around 1000 BCE: the Babylonian star catalogue MUL.APIN listed the constellations along the Sun's path. Astrology then predicted the fate of kings and kingdoms, not of individuals.
  • Around 400 BCE: Babylonian astronomers divided the ecliptic into 12 equal signs of 30 degrees. Modern estimates place this between about 409 and 398 BCE.
  • 2nd–1st century BCE: in Alexandria, after Alexander the Great took Egypt in 332 BCE, Babylonian astrology merged with the Egyptian star calendar into horoscopic astrology. The Ascendant and the 12 houses date from here; the word horoscope originally meant "hour-watcher".
  • 2nd century CE: Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria, the foundation of Western astrology. Around 130 BCE, Hipparchus had already discovered precession, the motion that would later pull the signs and constellations apart.
  • 8th–12th centuries: scholars in the Islamic world, centred on Baghdad, translated and developed Greek astrology. In 1138 the Tetrabiblos was translated from Arabic into Latin and returned to Europe.
  • 17th–18th centuries: as the heliocentric model won out, astrology lost its place in scholarship; in 1697 Pierre Bayle called it childish.
  • Early 20th century: Alan Leo (1860–1917) turned astrology toward describing character instead of predicting events, and is often called the father of modern astrology. Carl Jung contributed ideas that led to psychological astrology.
  • 1930s: British newspapers began printing horoscopes by Sun sign; in 1937 R. H. Naylor had a regular "Your Stars" column in the Sunday Express. From then on, for most people, "the zodiac" meant just the Sun sign.
  • From 2017: the Co–Star app built full birth charts from NASA JPL astronomical data and passed 20 million downloads by April 2021.

Young people in Vietnam are following the same path: from "what sign are you?" to a full birth chart with the Moon and the Rising sign.

What you need

Your date of birth alone gives you your Sun sign and the positions of most planets; birth time and birthplace unlock an exact Moon, the Rising sign and the 12 houses. Name and gender aren't used.

InformationUnlocksIf you don't have it
Date of birth (solar calendar)Sun sign, positions of Mercury through Pluto, the angles between themRequired
Time of birthAn exact Moon, the Rising sign, the Midheaven, 12 housesThe chart is set for 12:00 noon; on about 4 days in 10 the Moon changes sign during the day, so the Moon sign isn't certain
Place of birthLatitude and longitude for the Rising sign and houses; the right time zone at the moment of birthWith a time but no place, there's still no Rising sign

The Rising sign changes about every two hours on average. By HiMi's count across 3,000 charts for Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, about 1 person in 5 would get a different Rising sign if their birth time were off by just 10 minutes. That's why the time on a birth certificate is worth more than "sometime in the afternoon".

People born in southern Vietnam between 1960 and June 1975 should take note: clocks then ran on UTC+8, an hour ahead of today. HiMi converts automatically from the place and year of birth. By HiMi's count, wrongly using UTC+7 shifts the Rising sign by 15 degrees on average, and nearly half of those people would end up with a different Rising sign.

The three parts of a chart

Every position in a chart reads as a three-part sentence: the planet says which part of you, the sign says how that part works, the house says where in life it tends to show up. Aspects show whether those parts cooperate or pull against each other.

PartAnswers the questionHow manyExample
PlanetWhich part of you?10 bodies, counting the Sun and MoonMars: how you act and fight
SignIn what style?12 signs of 30° eachLibra: weighing things up, seeking fairness
HouseIn which area of life?12 houses, counted from the Ascendant10th house: career, public standing
AspectHow do the parts work together?5 main aspectsSquare 90°: two parts pull against each other and need reconciling

Put together, "Mars in Libra in the 10th house" reads: you act in a considered way, looking for agreement, and you pour that drive into your work. That's an actual placement from the sample chart further down.

Drawn out, a chart is a wheel: the outer ring holds the 12 signs, the inner ring the 12 houses, the planet symbols sit between them, and the lines in the middle are aspects. The Ascendant is always on the left, at the eastern horizon.

The twelve signs

Each sign is a set of qualities with a bright side to build on and a shadow side to work on; no sign is better than another. The same table is used to read the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant and every planet.

SignSun enters (Vietnam time)ElementModeBright sideWhat to work on
Aries ♈20 or 21 MarFireCardinalWilling to start, direct, full of energyImpatient, quits once the thrill fades

The second column is the day the Sun enters each sign in Vietnam time, calculated by HiMi for every year from 1950 to 2030; a sign runs until the day before the Sun enters the next one. The date moves by a day or two from year to year, so people born near a sign change need their birth year, and sometimes their birth time, to be sure.

In Vietnamese, Scorpio has three names: Bọ Cạp, Thiên Yết and Hổ Cáp; HiMi uses one fixed name and lists the others in the glossary.

Elements and modes

The twelve signs are the product of four elements and three modes: each element-mode pair gives exactly one sign. These two axes are the quickest way to see which way a whole chart leans.

ElementCardinal: starts thingsFixed: holds steadyMutable: adapts
Fire: enthusiasm, action, inspirationAriesLeoSagittarius
Earth: practical, persistent, gets resultsCapricornTaurusVirgo
Air: thinking, connecting, exchanging ideasLibraAquariusGemini
Water: feeling, intuition, attachmentCancerScorpioPisces

To balance the elements, HiMi scores each position: the Sun, Moon and Ascendant get 2 points each; Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn get 1 point each. The three outer planets don't count, because they stay in a sign for years and a whole generation shares them.

The dominant element is a natural strength. An element with only 0 or 1 point is something to learn on purpose, like an empty square in numerology or a missing role in BaZi.

The Big Three

The Sun, Moon and Ascendant are read first: they're tied to your exact birth day and time, so they tell people apart more clearly than the slow planets.

PositionAboutQuestion to check yourselfNeeds
SunYour core self, your will, what makes you feel truly yourselfWhen am I proudest of myself?Date of birth
MoonFeelings, the need for safety, how you react when tired or sadWhen I'm exhausted, what do I need to recover?Date of birth; birth time if the Moon changes sign that day
AscendantHow you walk into new situations, the first impression you makeWhat do new people usually say about me?Birth time and place

The three positions give 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 combinations, so two people with the same Sun sign are often very different. Rising signs aren't evenly spread: by HiMi's count at Vietnam's latitudes, Sagittarius rises longest and accounts for about 10.6% of charts, while Aries rises fastest and is only about 6.1%.

When the Sun and Moon are in different elements, your will and your feelings may want different things. That's not a flaw, just a place where it helps to know yourself better.

The planets

The ten bodies fall into three groups by speed: the personal planets change sign quickly and say most about you individually; the social planets say how you grow within a community; the generational planets stay in a sign for years and describe a whole cohort.

BodyAboutFull trip through the zodiacGroup
Sun ☉Core self, will, vitality1 yearPersonal

Uranus ♅Change, freedom, surpriseAbout 84 yearsGenerational
Neptune ♆Dreams, ideals, compassionAbout 165 yearsGenerational
Pluto ♇Transformation, power, letting goAbout 248 yearsGenerational

Between 1950 and 2015, Neptune and Pluto each changed sign only five times. So "Pluto in Scorpio" is a shared mark of people born roughly 1984–1995, not a personal trait; HiMi reads the generational planets only through houses and aspects.

Retrograde is when a planet, seen from Earth, appears to move backward against the stars for weeks or months. It's a viewing-angle effect as Earth overtakes or is overtaken in its orbit, like a car beside you seeming to roll backward as you pass it. The Sun and Moon are never retrograde.

Charts also show the North Node, where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic heading north; modern astrology reads it as a direction for growth. It's a geometric point, not a body.

The twelve houses

The houses divide the sky at your birth into 12 areas of life, starting from the Ascendant on the eastern horizon and running counter-clockwise. You need a birth time and place to calculate them.

HouseArea of lifeHouseArea of life
1Self, appearance, how you begin7Partners, marriage, the person opposite
2Money, possessions, self-worth8Deep sharing, joint resources, big transformations
3Early learning, siblings, communication9Higher learning, travel, belief, philosophy
4Home, family, roots10Career, reputation, goals
5Creativity, play, romance, children11Friends, community, hopes
6Daily work, health, habits12Inner life, rest, what lies hidden

The cusps of houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are the four angles of the chart: the Ascendant, the Nadir, the Descendant and the Midheaven. Planets close to these angles are considered prominent.

There are many ways to divide the houses. The most common on international sites is Placidus, which divides by the time each point takes to rise from the horizon to the top of the sky; the oldest is Whole Sign, where each house is exactly one sign. By HiMi's count across 3,000 charts born in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the two methods put about half the planets in different houses, so your chart always states which method it uses.

Aspects

An aspect is the angular distance between two planets around the zodiac. When the distance is close to one of the five angles below, those two parts of you are read as "talking" to each other.

AspectDegreesOrb HiMi usesWhat it suggests
Conjunction ☌0°8°The two parts merge and amplify each other
Sextile ⚹60°5°A chance to cooperate, if you take the initiative
Square □90°7°The two parts pull against each other, pressure that drives growth
Trine △120°7°Flowing, natural talent, easy to take for granted
Opposition ☍180°8°Two poles to balance, often seen through other people

The orb is how far from the exact angle still counts; with the Sun or Moon involved, the orb widens by 2°. With these orbs, a chart has about 19 aspects on average; HiMi's readings focus on the few tightest ones between personal planets.

Squares and oppositions aren't bad omens. They're where the friction is, and so where people tend to grow the most.

Seasons: transits and life milestones

If the birth chart is the map, the Seasons layer is the weather: today's planets keep moving and pass over the positions in your chart one by one. Astrology calls these transits.

Slow planets mark long stretches; fast planets just colour a day. Jupiter spends about a year in each sign and Saturn about two and a half, so their transits are the milestones worth preparing for.

MilestoneApproximate ageUsual theme
Jupiter return12, 24, 36, 48, 60A new cycle of learning and widening horizons
Saturn square and opposition to itself6–8, 13–16, 21–23The tests of each stage of growing up, learning responsibility
First Saturn return28–30Stepping fully into adulthood, reviewing goals
Uranus opposite Uranus39–44Wanting change, living more truthfully
Second Saturn return58–59Taking stock, choosing what to keep for the next stage

Mercury retrograde is the transit people talk about most online, about three times a year for roughly three weeks each. In 2026 there are three periods in Vietnam time: 26 Feb–21 Mar, 30 Jun–24 Jul and 24 Oct–13 Nov. HiMi doesn't treat it as a curse: it's a good time to review, fix and clarify before starting something new.

On HiMi, the Seasons layer opens from age 16 at the level of long stretches; year-by-year readings are for people aged 18 and over, following the same rules as BaZi and numerology.

Why your sign may differ on other sites

There are three reasons, and only the first is a genuine mistake; the other two are different conventions.

  1. Cusp dates. Many sites print a fixed date range for each sign, but the day the Sun changes sign shifts from year to year, as the table of the twelve signs shows. By HiMi's count, about 3% of birth dates between 1950 and 2015 are days when the Sun changes sign during the day; those people need a birth time. Charts on HiMi are calculated for the exact moment, so they don't have this problem.
  2. Signs aren't constellations. The Western zodiac follows the seasons: 0° Aries is always the March equinox. Meanwhile Earth's axis wobbles slowly, a motion called precession, which moves the equinox point back about 1 degree every 72 years. After more than two thousand years, the stretch of sky that is the sign Aries now lies in the constellation Pisces. For people born 1950–2015, about 87% have their Sun outside the constellation that shares their sign's name.
  3. Indian astrology. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the stars instead of the seasons, so it's about 24 degrees apart. Calculated that way, almost 79% of people move back to the previous Sun sign; Minh in the sample chart would be a Cancer instead of a Leo.

What about the "13th sign", Ophiuchus? By modern astronomical boundaries, the ecliptic passes through 13 constellations; the 13th is Ophiuchus, between Scorpius and Sagittarius. In 2026, the Sun is in Ophiuchus from about 1 to 18 December. But neither Western nor Indian astrology has an Ophiuchus sign, because a sign is one of 12 equal parts of the sky, not the outline of a constellation.

HiMi uses the tropical zodiac like every Western astrology site, says so on the chart, and is upfront that your sign isn't the constellation you see in the sky.

Reading a sample chart

The example is Minh, the made-up person from the BaZi and numerology articles: born at 14:30 on 15 August 1995 in Ho Chi Minh City (10.78° N, 106.70° E, UTC+7). Unlike BaZi, astrology doesn't convert to solar time; the birthplace longitude is already part of the Ascendant calculation.

Reading in five steps:

  1. The Big Three: Leo, Aries, Sagittarius. All three are Fire. Minh runs on enthusiasm: he wants to do something meaningful to him (Sun in Leo), reacts quickly and directly (Moon in Aries), and walks into new things with optimism and curiosity (Sagittarius Rising). The Ascendant is just over 2° from Capricorn: if the birth time were 10 minutes off, the Rising sign could be Capricorn, so Minh should double-check the time on his birth certificate.
  2. Elements: Fire dominates. Fire scores 8 of 11 points; Earth, Air and Water get just 1 point each. What he already has is energy and the ability to fire others up; what to learn on purpose is patience with detail (Earth), listening to other viewpoints (Air) and naming subtle feelings (Water).
  3. The tightest aspects between personal planets. Moon trine Venus (0.4° orb), Sun conjunct Venus (1.6°) and Sun trine Moon (2.0°): will, feelings and how he loves all point the same way, warm and likeable. On the other hand, Moon opposite Mars (4.9°) suggests feelings that flare under pressure, and Mercury square Jupiter (3.5°) suggests lots of ideas but a tendency to overpromise.
  4. Prominent houses. Sun and Venus in the 8th: Minh finds meaning through deep bonds and big changes. Mars in the 10th: his drive goes into his career. Moon in the 4th: home is where he recovers. Jupiter, ruler of his Sagittarius Ascendant, is in the 12th: his growth often starts inside, in time alone.
  5. Current Seasons. Saturn returned to its natal position on 24 March 2025, when Minh was 29.6: the milestone of stepping fully into adulthood has just passed. From 30 June 2026 to 26 July 2027, Jupiter moves through Leo and touches his natal Sun three times: 15 October 2026, 11 February 2027 and 12 June 2027. This is usually read as a season of being seen, good for taking on a bigger role.

Something to reflect on. A fiery, warm and quick person, with a natural pull that brings others along. The thing to train is a slower rhythm: before reacting, pause and name the feeling; before taking on more, measure his capacity.

This reflection is also only one way of reading. Another reader might stress something else, and only Minh knows which parts ring true.

What astrology can and can't tell you

Astrology is a rich, image-filled language for talking about yourself, not a proven measurement.

Astrology can open up:

  • A shared vocabulary for naming different parts of yourself: will, feelings, how you think, how you love, how you act.
  • Questions to check yourself, like the three in the Big Three section.
  • A sense of time for looking back on your life in stages, such as the milestone near 30 or Jupiter's 12-year cycle.

Astrology can't tell you:

  • All of who you are. Everyone born on the same day has almost the same planetary positions. A study that followed 2,011 pairs of people born within five minutes of each other, so-called "time twins", found them no more alike than anyone else.
  • A scientifically validated result. In 1985, Nature published Shawn Carlson's double-blind experiment: 28 astrologers, 26 of them chosen by an American astrological society, helped design the procedure and then matched over 100 charts to personality profiles. The results were no better than chance. Science classes astrology as a pseudoscience.
  • A replacement for a professional. Don't use a chart to choose a career for your child, hire or reject people, choose or leave a partner, or decide on health, large sums of money or legal matters.
  • A verdict on compatibility. Lines like "this sign doesn't go with that sign" have no basis and can easily hurt people. HiMi doesn't score compatibility between signs.

Watch out for the Barnum effect. In 1948, psychologist Bertram Forer gave his students what he said was a personal personality analysis, taken from a newsstand astrology book; in fact everyone got the same text. Over 40% rated it perfectly accurate, and the average was above 4 on a 5-point scale. The vaguer a statement, the easier it is to see yourself in it, so HiMi prefers specific statements that could be wrong, so you can check them yourself.

The best way to use it is to treat each statement as a hypothesis: read it, compare it with your real experience, keep what's true and drop what isn't. When a statement turns up in astrology, BaZi, numerology and a psychological test alike, that's the hypothesis to check first.

From birth chart to Rise

On HiMi, a birth chart is only a starting point: it moves through three layers, Blueprint, Seasons and Rise, like BaZi and numerology, and always ends with something you can do.

LayerThe questionWhat astrology contributesMinh's example
Blueprint: the starting mapWho am I, where am I strong, what should I train?Big Three, element balance, tight aspects, prominent housesAll three are Fire; Earth, Air and Water get 1 point each; Moon opposite Mars
Seasons: the weatherWhich season of life am I in?Jupiter and Saturn transits; returnsJust past his Saturn return (3/2025); Jupiter crosses his natal Sun from 10/2026 to 6/2027
Rise: the pathWhat can I do to grow?Turning thin elements, tense aspects and transit seasons into concrete actionsWrite one line naming a feeling each evening; sleep on it before taking on more; in the Jupiter season, take a small leadership role with a result milestone set in advance

When three methods meet. BaZi reads Minh as a responsible Wu Earth, with Resource, meaning support, hidden, so he tends to carry things alone. Numerology points to an empty square 2, the square of listening and accepting help. Astrology, by a completely different route, finds the Moon in Aries opposite Mars and Water at just 1 point: feelings rise fast and get handled fast, rarely pausing to be named. Three readings point to one thing: learning to slow down to feel, and to lean on others. An overlap like this is worth checking first, but it's still only a hypothesis for Minh to test against his own life.

HiMi's underlying idea stays the same: your chart shows where you start, as in the story of Yuan Liaofan. Way of thinking and passion, the two factors Inamori Kazuo stressed, are yours to choose every day.
